Revelation 12:11 “They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.”
I have been meditating on this passage for the last few weeks. It is a unique verse in Revelation 12, a chapter that is focused largely on the actions of the Dragon (Satan), the woman (the symbol for the church) and the residents of heaven. This is the only verse in chapter 12 that deals with how individual Christians are victorious in their struggle against the dragon. This is a great encouragement to me because it declares with certainty that the dragon can be overcome and the means by which it can be done. However, it is also a challenge to me because I find in myself a tendency to not want to go all the way in overcoming. Please prayerfully join me in meditating on God’s Word to us His children in this battle we are a part of.
"They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb.” This first part is absolutely critical in the Christian's victorious battle with Satan. It reveals that this is not a new struggle between us and Satan but rather it is an ancient struggle between Christ and Satan which we are participating in. This struggle has already seen its defining moment in the death of Christ for our sins, removing the only cause that Satan has to accuse us. It declares that we do not conquer the devil in our own power but rather in the victorious sacrifice of Christ on our behalf. Knowing this truth, Satan does all that he can to entice us to engage him in our own strength. This may be through legalistic attempts to overcome temptation through our own willpower or through the words of others who cast doubt on the full sufficiency of Christ in our lives. In all of these battles that we face the blood of Christ ensures that “in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” Romans 8:37. Holding on to our identity as redeemed sons and daughters of God we are redeemed and transformed through the blood of the Lamb.
“And by the word of their testimony.” This is the all important second piece to overcoming by the blood of the lamb and is to easy to forget. Satan works tirelessly to tempt us to rest content in our own salvation with no regard for the people around us who do not know the salvation that comes through Jesus Christ. However, this tendency results in spiritually selfish Christians who have embraced the sacrifice of Christ but are unwilling to sacrifice themselves. This message makes it emphatically clear that it is both the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony to others about the love of God that results in victory over the dragon. Anything less than both of these cannot not result in overcoming.
"They did not love their lives to the death.” This passage is a strong reproof to my desire for self-preservation. It represents an unconditional commitment to the Lamb rather than my own safety and comfort here and now. Anything short of this determination will give the dragon an edge to manipulate me with. As this new month begins I pray that you will join me in seeking to totally commit our lives to serving God both through accepting His sacrifice and His power in our lives and through sharing what He has done with all who need to know the grace of Christ.
